did you know that i never wanted to go to asu? did you know that when i was just a wee-girl that i wanted to go to notre dame? i never really knew why i hated asu so*, and i never knew why i loved notre dame so... but i know now.
seriously, asu? no. really?! at least president obama has a sense of humor about the honorary degree ("did you know that these honorary degrees are hard to come by? i'm one for two this season."). i can't say so much about asu... asu - you must think so highly of yourself.
but all i gotta say is: why would you have a person - who lacks the experience enough to even get an honorary degree from your school - speak at your graduation ceremony? if you feel that he is unworthy of an HONORARY degree, why would you want his words influencing those kids graduating from your school?
oh, and how many of your graduates have ever gone on to be leader of the free world... just a thought.
lame, asu... lame. at least we got a hilarious snl skit out of it.
*my sister went to asu west... and while it is associated with asu, the west campus isn't the UA rival like the main campus is, so just in case my sister's reading - asu west is exempt from my hatred.

whew! at least asu-w was out of that running :P but seriously... what was asu thinking?
OOOH How did your 5k go this weekend??? Do tell!! :D:D
I grew up hating both ASU and UofA because they were in the old Western Athletic Conference with BYU and both, but particularly ASU, regularly stomped BYU. In those days, BYU was no good at football (not that they're great now) but good at basketball (Lute was either new or not yet at UofA), so it would beat them or be competitive in basketball but get killed in football.
Then the Arizona schools moved to the PAC-10 and, of course, I was a life-long USC fan, so there was still animosity.
When we moved to Phoenix, I became, as is my tendancy, a homer, and I established an allegiance to ASU (but not if they were playing BYU or USC) before two of my kids went to UofA. My law firm's Tucson office's arrogant UofA/Tuscon versus ASU/Phoenix diatribe also sort of ingrained my dislike of UofA.
So I don't really love or hate either of them, and while UofA is probably the better university overall, they both have some excellent programs, some weak ones, the problems of legislative underfunding compared to other states, and well earned reputations as party and drinking schools.
But I totally agree that ASU's handling of the honorary degree was ridiculous and the SNL Weekend Update take is hilarious. So were the President's jokes about honorary degrees in both the ASU and Notre Dame commencement addresses.
pdaddy - you hit on the head... az wildcats are pretty dang arrogant about tucson/ua being better than phoenix/asu.
it's only okay that we're so arrogant b/c it's true... tucson and ua are better than phoenix and asu.
hahahahahaha! i'm so funny. i'm rolling on the floor laughing now... or for you youngins, i'm ROFL-ing!
I watched Obama's ASU speech- I thought it was really good. and he made a funny joke about the President of the school soon learning the full meaning of "tax audit"
The Daily Show also did a funny report of ASU not giving the degree, you should look it up. It was Jason Jones.
Oh and UofA kicks ASU's butt.
Just had to add that!
wow, pdaddy... maybe we were both wrong about UA being better than ASU.
"you hit on the head."
i'm pretty sure that i left "the nail" out of that sentence... i blame it on my excitement, so UA still beats ASU :)
Now THAT was funny.
Really.
I'm clearly outnumbered here so I will not get into the whole ASU/UofA thing :-). However, I do agree that ASU was lame to not give an honorary degree to President Obama. The SNL skit was definitely funny though!
GO WILDCATS!
